The café is situated in a villa built in
1878. Since the 1920ies there was a coffee house on the ground
floor.
The Einstein opened sometime at the end of
the 1970ies or beginning of the 1980ies. It is designed like a
classical Vienna coffee house: Mirrored walls, high ceilings,
marble tables and red velvet sofas.
Sometimes the Einstein offers live concerts.
I remember McCoy Tyner playing solo piano here in the eighties —
I was impressed!
Over the years (and due to the Berlin boom) a
second coffee house was opened in the eastern part of the city
(Unter den Linden 42). Also about six Einstein coffee shops
(hello Starbucks!) can be found in the city today. So whenever
you see an Einstein sign and not this villa — don't be confused.
