Place:

When I first visited Rome in the middle of the 70ies this was where I stayed — and it became an everlasting love:  The Ghetto and the area around Campo de' Fiori are my favorite neighborhoods in Rome.

Unfortunately many people feel like this — and so it is hard to find a reasonable restaurant in that area these days:  Too many tourist traps around the lovely Campo.

Il Portico is an exception.  This typical Roman ristorante in one of these typical small streets is a gem compared to the fashionable restaurants where some super-friendly jerk tries to talk you into the place.

Food:

A typical Roman menu with a lot of choices.  They also serve pizza.  Everything I had was really good.  I am still searching for the bill in that big pile on my desk:  I'll post what I had when I find it.

I found the bill! It only gives prices and a general description:

   1 Vino.......................
   1 Acqua Minerale.......
   2 Antipasti................
   2 Primi Piatti.............
   1 Secondo Piatto.......

Service:

It's a family business — and the family obviously was in a good mood when I was there.  They were anxious to make this dinner a success.

Overall:

When you're looking for that typical Roman restaurant, family-owned, not too trendy, reasonably priced — then Il Portico is an excellent choice.
